From Sinterklaas to Santa Claus 'Twas the Night Before... is inspired by the classic 19th-century poem 'A Visit from Saint Nicholas' by Clement Clarke Moore, first published in 1823. This poem played a key role in shaping the modern image of Santa Claus: a jolly, rather plump figure who on Christmas Eve travels by sleigh and reindeer -- named Dasher, Dancer, and Donner & Blitzen -- going from house to house to drop gifts down chimneys into stockings hung above the fireplace. The poem built upon the tradition of Sint-Nicolaas, the holy bishop known to us as Sinterklaas. Dutch colonists brought their Sinterklaas traditions to New York, formerly known as New Amsterdam. There, "Sinterklaas" linguistically evolved into "Santa Claus".
